Following a job move we settled down near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire but by more luck than judgement we joined the Upper Thames. We soon found out it was quite different 'down south'. Most of the venues were on hard standing, a novelty for us, as we were used to fields. There were some noticeable exceptions, Fawley Meadows (left picture) was one of our favorite sites, right on the banks of the River Thames and just a short walk into Henley on Thames.
We soon made new friends in the centre and the variety of rallies never seemed to amaze us. One thing that Upper Thames were good at were organising large rallies and their celebration rallies were brilliant. Some of the Rally Officers excelled at cooking (see middle picture) and we had many memorable weekends eating home cooked food on the rally field.
The times we did go rallying on fields quite often ended up being muddy affairs. And on many occasions I ended up towing fellow ralliers off the field. I have towed off famous people (bottom picture), and been the only outfit to get off the field unaided (the rest were towed off by tractor) I am sure those people at the Bluebell Rally at Checkendon will remember it well!
We still meet up with folk from Upper Thames, mainly on the larger rallies, and it is as if it was just yesterday that we were rallying with them every weekend!
